Did you change the layer's opacity before you made it a smart object? If so you need to make the smart object first.

Chuck, thanks very much.  Sad to say, I wouldn't have thought of that.  I double-clicked the smart object icon to open the underlying file, and I saw that the opacity was 72%.  I moved that to 100%, saved it, and it updated the smart object to 100%.  Thanks, again.
