Hi,

We are facing an issue that InDesign file is hidden sometimes when working with server.

We are using Mac OS 10.8.4 and InDesign CS6.

If we enable to show hidden file, then we can get the file. But the issue is not occurring in all machines, only in specific machines.

Does anyone know the permanent solution for this, kindly let me know?

What InDesign file is hidden? Do you mean the InDesign application is hidden? (No, it's not, it always exists in the Application folder.) Do you mean a particular file you have been working? I really can't fathom what you're talking about. You need to provide clearer information for us to help you.

Are you opening up your files from a server? Have you tried opening them up from your local drive?

Hi,

InDesign file (not InDesign application) is hidden in network drive, not in local drive (i.e., Data, Desktop, etc.,).

Do you mean a particular file you have been working? --Not particular file and not all the files, sometimes it happens in any of InDesign file.

Are you opening up your files from a server? Have you tried opening them up from your local drive? --We always open, work, and save the InDesign file in server (smb//). If we want to again work with the file, it is missing in the server path. To recognize the file, we needed to make show hidden files ON and then open it and re-save the file. It happens in only one Mac machine, not in all machines.

Please let me know if more clarification required.

How do you name that file? Is a dot at the beginning?

It starts with actual file name. No dot in the prefix.

Are all machines connected to the server using the same protocol (smb/afp/etc)?

The poster didn't explain the situation well. They replied to a similar thread which explains it better:

"Files that we create with indesign cc and photoshop cc are written to network drive with the Hidden File attribute active. This makes the files appear to be missing when viewed with the apple finder. Our windows machines display the hidden files when we check the Hidden Files checkbox under the view menu. When we change the properties in windows deselecting the Hidden attribute the files re appear in the Apple finder window. This exercise is time consuming and a bit confusing for the less experienced users. Can the hidden attribute be turned off? Files saved to local drives seem to be saving properly."

The fact that it happens with both in Photoshop CC and InDesign CC seems to take it out of the issue of an InDesign bug. Could be a mac OS operating system bug or could be a server setting issue, or both.

Server setting, or bug i reckon

Our studio were getting hidden file problems when our Macs were saving files out to the server via AFP, then some bright spark started saving files via SMB. Any connections via AFP weren't seeing a lot (but not all) files saved from the SMB MAC/PC. This was disconcerting because two people had the same Indesign file open at the same time.

We all use SMB now to combat the problem.
