Old Photo Restoration

I have this turn of the century photo I want to retouch/restore the subjects face and am willing to spend hours to improve the subject's face.

I started to fiddle using the spot healing brush and rubber stamp capacity 15% and did improve slightly however if there is another method then possible the work would be more productive.
