InDesign CC, EPUB 3 and Typekit

I'm completely new to EPUB but I (hope I) keep to good practice generally in terms of paragraph, character styling and so on.

Playing around trying to get the feel of it - exporting my book (all text typeset but no graphics yet), EPUB 2.0.1 comes out nearly perfect. But EPUB 3 omits the fonts, even though I have "Include Embeddable Fonts" checked.

I am using a Typekit font which I understand is licensed to use for EPUB.

I suppose I can just export in the older format but I'd like to understand the what and why.

Any advice gratefully received!

Ruth

Hi Ruth,

I'm sorry you ran into trouble here. We tested this in EPUB v2 and v3 from InDesign. The Typekit fonts were embedded correctly.

Could you tell me which Typekit fonts you've used in this document? Also, which version of InDesign do you currently use?

Let me know and we'll take it from there.

Cheers,

Benjamin

I think a better question might be, “which epub reader was this tested with?”

Thank you.

In reply -

I am using Mrs Eaves Roman

Mrs Eaves | Typekit

I am using InDesign CC 2017 on Windows

I have tested it on Adobe Digital Editions 4.5 and also on iBooks on iPad (still early days yet!)

Hope this gives you enough info to go on!

Hi Ruth,

Would you be able to send us an email here: support@typekit.com with the InDesign file you're using and the EPUB it's exporting? I was able to use Mrs Eaves with no issue, created an EPUB and the font showed up.

Let me know and we'll take it from there.

Cheers,

Benjamin

Thank you - will do - perhaps I'm doing something really basic incorrectly.

Hi Marianne

Typekit tried to help and we went back and forth with files but they weren't able to replicate the problem so it currently remains unresolved.

I posted (link below) to see if anyone else was having the problem but haven't had any replies.

I haven't upgraded yet to the new InDesign yet though. Maybe that will help!

I just did a test page (Reflowable text ePub 3), using the font Mrs Eaves without any problems.

CC2018 on High Sierra.

By the way, as users can change the typeface to suit their requirements I wouldn't worry too much about being precious about a special font.

Thanks - I'm not - but I at least want the initial view to look half decent.

In addition if it is not working properly it should of course be noted.

You haven't used Master pages have you?

Try resetting your InDesign preferences to see if that helps. Bob Levine suggested that to someone on here the other day with an ePub issue and it sorted out their problem.

Hi, I've updated to CC2018, and reset my preferences but sadly still the same problem.

Yes, I have used master pages - but that's practically just a master frame. Anything else (page numbers for the print version etc) are stripped out. This should not affect the font, surely.

It's not urgent for me, for now I'll continue with the older EPUB 2.0.1

Have you tested it on some ePub devices ?

It might be worth you spending $15 and try validating your ePub with FlightDeck  (it's brilliant).

Hi, just on iBooks on iPad, same problem, but I plan on testing it on several devices once I can iron it out on Digital Editions
