Very often, but very inconsistently, I get an error when trying to open a PSD in Photoshop CC 2018. The error says "Cannot open the selected item because the file could not be found." This occurs in the following scenarios (but not every time nor on every file):

  • When attempting to open a recent file from the recent files pane upon opening photoshop (see attached image)
  • When attempting to open from the Open Recent pane in the File menu
  • When attempting to open from the "Open" pane in the file menu and navigating to the actual file in the file browser
  • Even some times when opening a PSD file directly from Finder by double-clicking

Please help.

Hi BillyAdams,

Have you tried clearing the recent file list from Photoshop (Open Photoshop File menu > recent file > Clear list> )? also, you can try an reset the Photoshop preferences and check if that helps. refer: Preferences in Photoshop
