1. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
Colin Brougham May 9, 2012 12:30 PM (in response to PatrickInBA)Prelude doesn't rename files--typically for good reason. With most tapeless formats, the file names must be "as they are" in order for the structure to maintain its integrity. Other formats, like DSLRs that record to MOVs are more flexible. You could use Bridge or Lightroom or even the OS file browser to do this, but it would be done before ingest into Prelude.
But anyway, make a feature request if it's something you'd like to see added: Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form

PatrickInBA May 9, 2012 12:45 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)Thanks Colin. Prelude isn't listed yet in the feature request page! I'll put it on there asap. Since I shoot a lot of both stills & vid I'll stick with my current flow of import to LR first and rename. Unfortunately LR doesn't save any meta other than the file name to video or create .xmp's. It is still a juggle between software as in meta works with stills in LR but not video, LR wants the files referenced in a specific spot or moved from within LR, how will this affect where files are for Prelude and hence Premiere, etc...
Slowly working to a perfect workflow.....

Man, when you figure it out, please let me know! Been trying to get there for awhile now

Thanks!

5. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
needles27 May 9, 2012 5:11 PM (in response to PatrickInBA)I just watched a lynda tutorial with Rich Harrington about Prelude, and he showed how to rename the file...all he did was click on the file name until it highlighted, and renamed it. He showed with a "reveal in finder" that the original file was not renamed. Then he sent that clip over to Pr and it had the new filename. I haven't played with Prelude yet, but he made it look like it was no trouble.

Colin Brougham May 9, 2012 6:34 PM (in response to needles27)That's renaming a clip. The OP is referencing renaming a file.

Once I have it figured out I'd tell you......but then I'd have to kill you.
It sure seems that elusive!

9. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
mikep.mtp Oct 6, 2012 9:05 AM (in response to PatrickInBA)If you use the transcode option it will open media encoder where you can rename the files in the queue. Although you have to do each one at the same time. and have to wait for files to transcode. Or after transcode just use bridge to batch rename.
Not the best solution but it is a work around till Adobe can get something to rename in Prelude without breaking the original video's file structure.

10. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
michaelgoshey Oct 6, 2012 3:52 PM (in response to mikep.mtp)Hi,
Thanks for your post. We have added the ability to rename on ingest into our Product Backlog for
Consideration.
Question for you: when using media with a complex structure (XDCAM, P2, etc) would you expect to actually rename the files on disk or the ability to apply an alias name that is stored in metadata such that the alias appears in all Adobe apps through the production workflow?
Thanks,
Michael

11. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
mikep.mtp Oct 6, 2012 5:50 PM (in response to michaelgoshey)Hi Mike
Thanks for your response.
Actually this is my first time working with the file based system. XDCAM. Usually the guys give me a single video file for footage and use it just it straight up.
But since I was given an XDCAM I did a search and came across this post. So being my first time not sure how helpful I can be but let me give you my current workflow so maybe this can help answer your question above.
I don't work with producers or directors I work with the end user or "viewer" as the case may be. So they are not technical and I can not tell them to get a copy of prelude and mark it up for me.
What I do is take the raw footage and transcode to a web friendly size ( at this point quality is not the issue but cut points are) and load them up to my site for the client to review and give me notes according to timecode.
Now when I load 20 of these up there and need to link them to my pages I like the files to be something I can understand. So I don't have to write down some sort of reference sheet so I can put the correct video on the correctly worded page.
Of course I can easily batch transcode in media encoder but it is nice to be able to view the files as a group in prelude. (and would be nice to) rename each one while I am looking at it and know what clip it is. then transcode all in one step renanming the originals as an alias if you like in the project panel but would like my transcoded files to be renamed also for the upload.
Not sure how it all works across the other programs yet, but I would like that if I can once on the initial ingest rename files to something I can easily understand what they are and be able to use that across the holy trinity Prelude, Premiere and After Effects. That would be most helpful

12. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
Al Bergstein Oct 7, 2012 12:06 AM (in response to mikep.mtp)Just a side issue, i rename Canon mxf files as I export them to disk from card, so by the time Prelude sees them they already renamed. One of the beauties in the mxf workflow. Don't see why it wouldn't work with AVCHD for example. There i simply strip the mts files and rename them.

13. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
michaelgoshey Oct 8, 2012 10:41 AM (in response to Al Bergstein)Hi –
For AVCHD, Prelude requires the support files in the folder structure to properly understand the metadata (and allow you to create metadata/logs/markers). If you manually strip out the *.MTS files (the naked essence video) Prelude will not be able to create metadata for it in CS6.
Cheers –
Michael

15. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
Al Bergstein Oct 8, 2012 11:15 AM (in response to michaelgoshey)To be clear, I believe that the way I do it with MXF files, does strip out metadata added on the camera as shot (i.e. markers). I don't use added metadata from the camera in my workflow, but if you were doing so, I'd at least be also backing up the cards as shot. I'm just happy I don't have to (G).

ISDV Oct 9, 2012 6:09 AM (in response to michaelgoshey)Question for you: when using media with a complex structure (XDCAM, P2, etc) would you expect to actually rename the files on disk or the ability to apply an alias name that is stored in metadata such that the alias appears in all Adobe apps through the production workflow?
Hi Michael,
I'm using a Sony XDCAM HD Professional Disc camera, and I would like to see the User-Defined Clip Titles I am giving to my discs throughout the whole production workflow.
Thank you very much in advanced!
Greetings,
Ivan

KGCW Oct 23, 2012 6:04 PM (in response to ISDV)Agreed, currently Prelude / AME seems not to import a lot of metadatas.

18. Re: Rename files in Prelude?
mlitty Sep 14, 2014 1:33 PM (in response to michaelgoshey)I would like to use Prelude at the point of my workflow where I'm initially pulling the files off of the media, for example, to move files off of the SD card to my hard drive.
At this point in the process, I would like to be able to rename the files on the file system so that they reflect the content. Renaming the clip in Prelude and leaving the filename as 00001.MTS doesn't help when I'm looking at the files on the hard drive to import. It doesn't aid my workflow at present.
I understand that Prelude does not do this by default to prevent breaking links to those files created in other projects and programs that may have already accessed them. At the point in my workflow where I would use Prelude, this would not be an issue.
**What I would like to see is a context menu (right-click) that allows the user to select multiple files, right-click, and choose "Make Filename match Clip Name" or something like that. This option would take all of the names given in Prelude and change the files on the drive to match.
Doing it this way would not interfere with the default function in Prelude but would add the ability to manipulate the file when convenient to the user.
Thanks!
