The footage problems may be fixed, but the defunct hardware acceleration gets in the way... Try turning off fast previews in teh comp viewer and then do a RAM preview. Also turn off the disk cache in the prefs. By default it's now own and well, notebook drives make for bad cache disks...
Thanks so much, Mylenium. (Hope life's been treating you well! I remember you from many years ago on the forums!)
Unfortunately, making those adjustments and trying to create a ram preview it now tells me the following:
"Ram preview needs two or more frames to play back." I have 1:30 selected though, so that doesn't make any sense. I tried it with just the first recommendation and with both. Same result.
OK, so I got it to render more frames by choosing fast draft ram preview. But it took me 25 minutes to render roughly 7 seconds. That's crazy. Using CS3 it took me no more than two minutes to render 40 seconds of it. Same computer. The only difference is updated to CS6 and os 10.7.3. Any other ideas of what could be causing the slow preview?
OK, now I've played around with the settings a lot. I've tried with the disc cache pref turned on, turned off, with fast previews turned off, turned on, adaptive resolution... with all of these settings it takes me roughly the same amount of time to render a single frame, just around 5 seconds. The composition size is 2048x2048, but I've got it set to quarter resolution, so it's 512x512. The project itself has 16 copies of the same footage, each masked and pre-comped. In the precomp there's a levels adjustment. That's it.
When I would start a ram preview in CS3 it would be this slow for the first maybe 10 frames, and then suddenly speed up. Here it's just like watching paint dry. ARGG!!!
If it's that severe, report it: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform. You might still wish to look into a few other things liek Quicktime settings and extensions. If there is a CoDec or something else that is not compatible with 64bit, it may severely impact performance because the 32bit to 64bit adapter code would run in quirks mode.
It is very severe. I just rendered out the nested comp so that it would be animation compressor rather than whatever Canon5D compression is to see if that helps. It actually made it render only 3 frames and then when I tried changing the settings I got that error message again. Ugh.
Wow, ok, so Tech support told me that my 2008 MacBook Pro with it's maximum 4BG of ram is not good enough to run CS6 AfterEffects. This is the reason why there are such severe errors. I find it really hard to believe that I can't even do a basic ram preview, but, oh well. I guess I'll cancel the subscription.
Fredoviola, i m so less alone reading your post.
I m from paris so please forgive my english !
I Have the exacly same issue, i was working with CS3 on an old computer, it was slow, but it works, i finally updated to CS5 thanks to adobe support, i was affraid that my computer couldn't work with it, but it worked finally very great !
I just had a new computer this days, faster, i was happy and very excited to finally test the CS6 on it... and then ...the same issue, just few frame playing, sometimes the message two or more frames to play back.
So i d like to go back to CS5 again, i have my project to finish in 2 days and i m a litlle embarrassed just now !
This problem seem to be recurrent when reading the people so i really hope that it will be fixed in the next few hours.... ? ( am I dreaming...?)
Whatever i m very happy about the creative cloud (unless the only 2 computer licence, and not a licence per personne (not per machine) )
I try with upgrading my RAM to 8GB tomorrow, hope this will work better.....
I will be upgrading to 5.5, hopefully that will work better! I wish you much luck with your projects!
Is the CS5 still available?
i jus purshase the creative cloud,
i ll try CS5 fior free period untill they fix the bug, but is it still available??
I bought the update dvd a long time ago but never paid for the upgrade. I hope it will still work, otherwise no AE on my Lion MacBook Pro.
How's Paris? I was on tour there a few years ago. Such a wonderful city and France a wonderful country!
ok, i 'll see tomorrow with more RAM
fredoviola , yes Paris is cool btw !
Thanks everyone for sharing & helping !
Wow, ok, so Tech support told me that my 2008 MacBook Pro with it's maximum 4BG of ram is not good enough to run CS6 AfterEffects. This is the reason why there are such severe errors.
That is incorrect information. Please give me the case number for your interaction with Technical Support so that I can follow up with whoever gave you that information.
There are two case numbers:
On a separate note 2008 MBP will gladly take 8MB and it will make a difference.
oh, is that right?! Wow, I'll update that immediately. Thanks.
Todd, I was on with tech support multiple times for over 2 hours yesterday. First thing a technician said was that I couldn't open cs3 projects without this kind of behavior. So, thinking that was the problem I hung up and recreated the simple project from scratch in cs6, only to find the same problem return immediately. Called back and after a lot of waiting for the technician to speak to his supervisors, they came back and said that 4BG is not recommended. That this, plus the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, were the culprits. That I could not expect it to work properly in this computer setup. I told them to me that didn't make sense, but they assured me. We agreed that the only thing for me to do would be to end the subscription and stop using it, as it doesn't work on my computer. Is that not true? If so, do you have any hints as to what could be going wrong? I can't do a simple ram preview...
Hi i just upgrade my MBP 2012 to 8G and that really help for the moment with CS6, it works, but not as fast as i expected !
It seems not to go really faster than CS5 on my MBP 2009 with only 4gb of RAM.
When i got the technical support i had a trick to do maybe you can try it :
1 close all adobe app
2 open finder, go to, then presss ALT and "library will appear" go to "library"
3 the preferences
4 there, try to rename the files begining by com.adobe.AfterEffects in 1com.adobe.AfterEffects
5 launch back AE
maybe that can help ?
doh! My lappy's max is indeed 4GB memory. My second laptop has 8GB but I use that one for mostly music work. Trying to keep them separated.
Thanks, Yelloween. I'll try that as well!
