After making a rectangular selection and then Modify/expand/ by say 150 pixels, the new expanded selection does not have square corners but does have corners at about 45 degrees?
Can you help with setting me up with the proper technique or give me some info on what's happening??
P.S. This happens in CS4, 5 or even the new CS6.
Here are two ways:
You could use Select>Transform Selection
Make the selection, go to quick mask, Filter>Other>Maximum and then exit quick mask.

There is antialiasing that comes into play. The two methods provided are the best workarounds..
I have a photo of some football players on the field and I am trying to remove the grass from the photo. I have done an initial pass with the Quick Selection tool. Some of the grass between the players legs is still showing. I did a further Refine Edge, selecting the grass I wanted to remove with the 'Subtract from Selection' option turned on. I assumed that this would subtract those parts of the image, but when I hit the 'Refine Edge' this time and click OK on the dialog box, it does not appear to do anything. The grass sections are still there and still selected. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Yes that the way expand works I thunk it due to rounding. If you create an action to expand the selection 1 Px at a time ten times then play that action 15 time you will have square cornors.
I have quick tip how to move active selection from one open document to another. For details with screenshots please visit this link http://adobephotoshopsecrets.blogspot.com/2012/11/quick-move-selection-from-one-document.h tml
I think you have wrong expectation from Refine Edge command. With that selection active try Similar from Select menu or use Color Range command for that kind of selection as Dekke McClelland explained in video listed above. Photoshop have many selection tools and every tool is designed for different purpose. You can make any kind of selection but you must use right tool for that purpose.
