    Rendering preview area

      Hi

System running CS3 with Matrox Axio LE.

I have recently started work on my first HD project. Although I'm still using CS3 I'm hoping to upgrade very soon to CS6 which I know will solve problems. However I can't do this yet, so help in the meantime would be appreciated and the question isn't restricted to the specific problem I'm facing.

The HD clips are Apple ProRes 422, which I know is native to CS6. However I need to turn them into a native format for my system, and I have chosen [1080i @ 25 fps] Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame HD.

I had initially dropped the clips onto the timeline (and there was the red bar over the top) I disabled the Render Previews and the red bar changed to a white bar. I then selected the work area (entire clip) and proceeded to export movie (from the file menu) to a Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame file. I did notice that when I started the export a red line re-appeared in the work area even though previews were disabled.

However I noticed that the files were not playing back as well as expected, especially when I did a test transcode to DVD. I initially thought this was due to a field inversion but it seems that I do need to render the ProRes 422 files (making a green bar) before exporting them to the Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame format - at least this seems to fix the problem.

Please could someone clarify, that if you try to export a file, with rendered previews disabled, which would otherwise need rendering, you won't get the proper result.

It will just add an extra process into my current workflow!

      Many thanks
