1. Re: I don't know how to use a light layer in After Effects CS4
Andrew Yoole May 18, 2012 7:07 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)You may require two light layers: an Ambient Light to give the whole layer a general spread of light, then a spot light to create a highlight. Adjusting the specularity and shininess of the layer will also yield different results.
If you're just trying to create a general highlight that rolls across the text, try the CC Light Sweep plugin instead. Also, applying a colour ramp to the layer can create the illusion of some lighting effects.

That is kind of a paradox. The whole point of using 3D lights is to have them illuminate the layer, including all shading properties. Color is defined by the layer's base color multiplied with light color and intensity. You really need to set your mind into 3D mode. That aside, I wouldn't bother using a light with flat text. Simply create a feathered circle on top (or 2 or 3), set blending mode to add and animate it across your type.

Rick Gerard May 19, 2012 11:43 AM (in response to Mylenium)I'd take a look at Light Sweep, try a feathered tight oval light gray solid with the blend mode set to add, try animating a spotlight. There are a million options that are easy to do

sensory_overflow May 21, 2012 12:24 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)Wow, I was never so excited to use a plugin before! I just see the light layers used so much and wanted to use it so many times at work, I felt like a kid.
THAT WAS FUN!
Thanks guys :y
