1. Re: I'm not seeing "Chapter Name" under "Type", "Text Variable", "Insert Variable". Is it gone?
P Spier May 20, 2012 1:33 PM (in response to LisRen19)There has never been a Chapter NAME variable. Are you thinking of Chapter NUMBER?
Chapter Numbers are set up in the Numbering and section options, are limited to one per document, and have very little real use. If you want the name of a chapter, as in the title of the chapter that appears on the chapter opening page, to appear on other pages, the running header variable would be appropriate.

LisRen19 May 20, 2012 1:52 PM (in response to P Spier)I'm watching a Lynda.com tutorial on long docs in inDesign and the presenter just went to "Chapter Name" - I've attached a screen shot. He's using CS5.5. I'm thinking that I need to set up my doc in a way I haven't.

P Spier May 20, 2012 1:59 PM (in response to LisRen19)Attachments don't work here. You have to embed images using the camera icon onthe web page like this:
In all probability, the presenter in your tutorial is using a Running Header typ variable and is slecting a style named Chapter Name. Running Header variables pick up text based on styles, either a character style or a paragraph style, so if the chapter name has a unique paragraph style assigned, you would pick that style from the list inthe define variable dialog and the variable will pick up text with that style assigned -- your chapter names.

5. Re: I'm not seeing "Chapter Name" under "Type", "Text Variable", "Insert Variable". Is it gone?
LisRen19 May 20, 2012 2:05 PM (in response to P Spier)Ah! I figured out with your help - I think...You can define a new text variable! I defined my own text variable as "chapter name". I haven't acutally given a style yet, so I'll see if it works. Thanks for heading me in the right direction.

6. Re: I'm not seeing "Chapter Name" under "Type", "Text Variable", "Insert Variable". Is it gone?
P Spier May 20, 2012 2:10 PM (in response to LisRen19)OK, I don't know for sure, but my guess would be that the presenter defined a Running Header variable by going to Type > Text Variables > DEFINE... and selecting the New button, choosing a Running Head type, picking the style, and givng it the Name Chapter Title which appears in the list. That probably happened earlier in the lesson.
