Auto align object in one layer to another

    Howard Hoffman Community Member

I am actually an Encore user who uses Photoshop only for the menu.  I am not experience with Photoshop.

A button in Encore menu is made up with a few layers. Example here can be a box and a text label below.  These are 2 different layers in Photoshop, grouped together.

I'd like to aling the text label the to box.  Normally the box is wider than the label. So a simple arrangement is center the text label according to the text width and box width.  Right now, I have to manually adjust it by choosing both and align "center".  Is there any way to automatically center the text label?

      thanks

          Hi,

you can try placing those 2 layes in single group.

So whatever alignement you will apply on the group will be applied to both of the layers inside that group

            Hello!

Another solution: If you select view>smart guides, you'll be able to "stick" the text on the box as you drag te text layers on top of the box.

Am I missing something here guys?  I am not sure why you didn't suggest selecting the text layer, (or as many layers as you want to center) and the Move tool, then Ctrl/Cmd a - to select the entire canvas, and then hitting Align horizontal centers from the Options bar.

Howard you can align layers to selections with Photoshop to nine places like a tick tack toe board.  Make a selection any selection you want like select all. Target the layer or layers you want to align then use one of the interfaces provided to do alinement for example  menu Layers>Align Layers to selection>hor(left/center/right) or vert (Top/Center/bottom) you may need to both a vertical and horizontal alignment to make the alignment you want. There are other interfaces like clicking on icon in a menu or tool option bar.

No, there is no automatic alignment mode, you always have to do something in order to align two or more existing elements. And I don't know of any raster image processing program that can do that. Only text creation can behave in that manner using its paragraph alignment options that affect each line and programs that support inline graphics inserted into the text can flow the graphics (images) along with the text but Photoshop can't do that. I don't think there is any program that will automatically align a layer if say, you add some pixel to a side of the layer.

I am not familiar with Photoshop.  If I read it correctly, some suggestions are manual steps.

One thing I did notice is the title label in the menu -- it's at the top of the menu and it's just text.  It's auto centered relative to the canvas.

In the case of buttons label, they are set as left-aligned.  If I change it to center, it will align to some where left to the box.  So I am not sure how what reference is chosen.  How do I find out?

                    Thanks
