    arie.supit

Hi, i'm new in here. Please help.

So the problem starts about last month. Been doing this for 6months now, the problem never show up until last month.

      1. When packaging it HANG

           - It hang when "Open document _______", so i need to force close and open it again, and it just fine, and save it and go home. (done with packaging)

= I'm just worried some links & fonts will be corrupted if i do this everytime i package a project (i basically package the file everyday base on the date (is this important to package a project everyday? cause i work in a non-profit magazine company, and should i package everyday?)

      2. When i open the file it HANG

           - It hang when i "Open document ______" from the beginning. Let say in the morning when i come to work and open the document it HANG. so i need to force close it again. and re-open it, and its FINE.

      3. Is a FontBook usefull? Cause the last guy that work here have a gazillion of fonts. Is it easy to use? How to use it?

I know this is OLD problem, but this problem just hit me now, please help. Thanks.

      I tried & read:

      2. InDesign Cs5.5 keep crashing whenever I open an existing document or make a new one. (didn't really tried but read it, and it says the SING problem)

What's the exact version of InDesign you're using (3-decimal) as reported by holding down Control and selecting About InDesign?

There is no point discussing this until you perform that update.

It's hard to say for certain, but there have been scores of bugs fixed by updates (esp. the 7.0.3 update), some of which are consistent with the symptoms you report.

                        Hi guys,

just want to give you an update.

So, as i said before that i work in a magazine company.... I tried open 0412m, and it opens right away, BUT when i tried to open 0512m, it got stuck.. so do you think the links are corrupted? the files are corrupted?

I'm afraid if i copy & paste some Ad from 0512m to 0612m, the 0612m will become like 0512m?

Please let me know if you have any questions about the files.

                        Thank you.

Are you **** a Save As on one issue to make it into the next issue? That's a common, but poor, workflow. It's much better to make a template with all of the required master pages, styles, swatches, static content and so forth, and make each issue from the template. Continuous recycling of documents allows any minor corruption to carry forward, and more corruption to creep in. Compared to Pagemaker (notoriously very bad in this workflow) and Quark Xpress, InDesign is very stable, but it is not perfect by any means.

                            Hi Peter,

Well i did save as from the old issue to make a new issue.

Because i need the ads? so what is the MOST useful ways?

its my first job in my field, so probably some help with this kind could be helpful too.

                            Thanks Peter!

I usually save ads and other client assets in a folder for each client, but your file organization may be different. For the newspaper I advise at oour local college we have folders for ads in the current issue folder for those that will run only once, and a master folder for ads that will run more than once, for example.

We build each issue from the master template, then Place ads, or if there is an ad that needs to carry over you can also copy from the previous issue and paste in the new one. This is relatively safe as what you are pasting is the link, or pointer, to the actual ad location.

Some years ago I worked for a local weekly that used the recycle method and Pagemaker, and honestly, starting from the template is not any slower after you've spent time going page by page and removing all the stuff you don't want, and it saves the panic when the file fails an hour before it is supposed to be on press, which happened more than once.

UPDATE --- I copied the Ads from the previous issue which is the 0612e, and now the 0612m become the same like the 0512m and 0612e which is HANG when packaging/opening the document.

So, could it be some of the Ads are corrupted??

Hi Peter, I would like to know more about file organization. Because i think my company file organization not really convenient I think.

Sorry for the delay -- been on deadline.

Let's see if I can explain this more clearly. I run a one-man studio here (but the same things can be done for a larger group), and I create a lot of projects that use only assets for one client at a time, like an ad that will be submitted to a newspaper or magazine. I don't have projects that use assets from both client A and Client Q very often. A lot of the images and graphics that I use are used over and over again, so I have a main directory that has a folder in it for every client, and in each client's folder I have subfolders for each job I do for them. I also have subfolders for Logos or photographs that belong to each client that will be used in many projects over the course of years. This allows me to keep all of a single clients assets organized, and when I need a logo, I fo to the logo folder for that client to get it. I don't need to search through old job folders to find it. If I find later that I've used an asset in one job, but now need it for another and DIDN'T put it in a folder of similar things, I'll copy or move it so I don't have to do it again next time. This works very well for me.

At the school, the newsapaper has advertisements each week that are sent in by the various advertisers. If the advertiser has contracted to run an ad for more than one week that ad will be placed into a "continuing advertisements" folder for the semester. If it runs only once, it goe into an ads folder in the "issue" folder. Each issue folder also has a stories folder and an art folder that contain the stoies and art that are to run in that issue. For art that gets reused, like the flag or little issutrations that run next to announcements, or holiday art, we have a central art folder that has subfolders of various categories of art. In theory, only things that will be used one time, for one issue of the paper, will be stored inside the issue folder. Anything that will be used more than once should be stored in a folder of similar materials to prevent amssing dozens, or hundreds, of copies of the same artwork. One very big advantage of working this way is that with only one copy you never need to worry about whther it is the "right" copy if there have been any changes.

We also have an InDesign Template file for each semester. This file has our styles, and three master pages. Master A is the front page and has the flag and volume information (and date placeholders that we override for each issue), along with column guides. Masters B & C are for left and right interior pages, they have a header and palceholders for date and page number. We keep a copy of the masthead with staff names on the pasteboard of the template, and that's also a convenient place to keep page titles like sports or editorial that you can then drag into a page, but we tend to use a library for most of that in order to keep down the clutter.

Was that at all what you were looking for?

                                    0612m

                                    ...

So yeah basically i do this for every issue since i'm doing a biweekly magazine that is why i have 0512e and 0512m every month

and i just copy every folder and rename it and delete everything in there except the publication (inDesign file), and delete everything in there and SAVE AS.

As you were suggesting me that i should make a template, maybe now i will start doing it.

Hopefully the problem that i'm having "Hang/Freeze while packaging/opening" will be gone FOREVER.

So now, as i start 0712e, i will start make a template and just copy the Ads from the previous issue. Correct??

Please let me know if i need to change anything it would help me learn more about inDesign and in this field.

                                    Thank you!

                                      As in template,

Should i keep the Ads in the template (even though it's a one time ad, but we never know if they want to continue or not) , AND delete all the articles or delete everything??

It looks to me like you are still recycling the same issue over and over by doing a Save As on the previous issue. This is most definitiely NOT the workflow I described.

There should be a template file, magzineTemplate.indt (or some other name of your choosing), stored in a convenient location. DO NOT USE A CURRENT ISSUE of you magazine to make this file. Start from scratch so you kow it is clean. This template should have all of the master pages you might need, any color swatches that are special, and your paragraph and character styles defined in it. Also include anything that will appear in every issue so you don't have to add it back each time. You can put ads in there, too, but I wouldn't unless they are expected to run for many issues as you'll just have to remove them al the time.

EVERY new issue should be started by opening this template file. If it is saved as a template it will have the .indt file extension, and by default it will alweays open as an Untitled document. Save AS with the new issue name and add the content for that issue. This means that every issue is a second-generation clone of the template, not the fifth, or twenty-third version with cumulative file problems built up over many saves.

Your directory structure might look something like this:

House Ads folder (for PSA and other fillers)

Miscellaneious Art folder ( for odds and ends that you use all the time, or for holidays, etc)

Note that these two folders are not contained inside a folder dedicated to any issue, or even any group of issues.

Volume Folder (for all the issues of a given volume [year])

                                             Template file.indt

Continuing Ads folder (this is where you keep ads that will run more than once. Use subfolders by advertiser, if it helps)

                                             Issue 1 folder

                                                  Stories to be edited

Stories ready to place (as editorial finishes they should move stories from the "to be edited" folder to this one so you know they are ready)

Art to be edited (raw photos, charts or other graphics that need attention)

Art ready to place (same as above with stories. when it's good to go, it get's moved here)

Ads (ads that are expected to run inthis issue only)

                                                  Issue1.indd (the layout)

Issue1.pdf (the output file for the printer)

                                             Issue 2 folder

                                                  Stories to be edited

                                                  Stories ready to place

                                                  Art to be edited

                                                  Art ready to place

                                                  Ads

                                                  Issue2.indd

                                                  Issue2.pdf

and so on. Next year you start a new volume folder and make a new template.
