Bug when exporting vertical format videos

    SimonTindemans Community Member

I just installed Lightroom 4.1 and converted my LR3 catalog. I enjoy being able to transcode videos for easier uploading, but the transcoder doesn't handle videos in vertical format very well.

I have vertical videos from an iPhone (1080x1920) and iPod touch (480x640). Both play fine within Lightroom, but when I try to transcode them on export, Lightroom does two undesirable things:

      1. It always produces videos in one of the standard horizontal formats (4:3 or 16:9), adding large black bars on the side.
      2. It selects a horizontal output resolution (including black bars) that is smaller than the original width (without the bars).

Whereas (1) could be 'by design' - although I wouldn't understand why - (2) is surely a bug. The result is that LR insists on converting the iPhone video to 640x480 (with a 270x480 picture size; 4x smaller than the original) and the iPod video to 320x216 (with a 162x216 picture size; 3x smaller).

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Did I overlook an option or switch? If not, I guess it's bug report time.
