again, I am a mac user, using trial version of LR4.1. Used Nikon Transfer to move my Nikon D800 files from my SD card onto my hard drive. Then I open LR4.1 and try to "add folder" but it will not recognize the D800 NEF files. I can't use ACR 7.1 either, it won't let me install it. What gives???

ACR 7.1 is for Photoshop CS6, not Lightroom. What version of Photoshop are you using?
As for Nikon Transfer, it's been reported a number of time that Nikon Transfer software corrputps the D800 raw files andmakes them unreadable...you would be far better off either using LR 4.1 or a Finder copy to transfer your D800 raw files and then importing into LR 4.1.
Forget ACR 7.1 because it has zero to do with Lightroom...it's only for Photoshop CS6.
Well, it's too late, I already used Nikon Transfer... now what?
Are the originals still on the card? If so, delete the ones you copied over with Nikon Transfer and simply use Lightroom to import them again, but this time directly from the card. That's the best way to do it, since Lightroom 4.1 supports the 800/800E. You'd save a step, too, since you wouldn't have to copy them over before importing.
You don't need to worry about Camera Raw 7.1 since you already have Lightroom 4.1, which has the same updates in it.
No, I use the feature on Nikon Transfer that automatically deletes files after transfer. Now I'm going through the process of trying to recover the files, but it's not working very well. I feel really screwed here by Nikon!
