DVD region codes issue with image file

      Hi all,

I know this may have been asked before but I spent a while searching and couldn't find a precise answer.

I have a project in Premiere Pro that I sent to Encore for DVD authoring, adding a simple menu. When I'm done, I choose to create a DVD image file, and in the presets I choose "All regions". Now when I mount that image with DaemonTools, Windows Media Player says that the region code is not correct and the movie cannot be played. I try with VLC Media Player and it works fine there.

So my question is if I'm making a mistake, or if actually Windows Media Player is not very reliable? I don't have access to a regular DVD player right now, might be able to burn a disc and try it at a friend's place, but that will be in a few days. In the meantime I was wondering what the problem could be. I need to make sure that this DVD will play everywhere, so I want it to be region free. It's not meant for mass replication, just some copies I will make myself to send to film festivals and some friends/acquaintances.

Just for the record, DaemonTools allows one to change the region code of the virtual unit so I tried a couple of changes to that and nothing happened, as expected (since the image is supposed to be region free, it either works with all of them or with none..). I will also try to burn it now and try to play it on my computer as a DVD disc but again, I don't see how that would change the situation since the image is the same.

      Thanks!

          Encore should ignore region settings.

To make one check, build to a folder and try that.

WMP is not a good option for testing.

I agree with Stanley - WMP is not a good choice for testing any type of DVD, with the exception of commercially replicated DVD-Videos.

For a period of time, MS had deactivated ALL DVD playback, but then added back support for commercially replicated DVD-Videos, as they felt that burned DVD-Videos were pirated. Not sure where MS is with WMP, in its latest incarnation, but I have found it to be ill-suited for DVD-Video playback.

I use MediaPlayer Classic HC, VLC or CyberLink's PowerDVD player, and all work fine for me.

Other than playing WMV's, WMP sits gathering dust, at least on my computers.

            Good luck,
