Confine images to page while in 'spread'?

I am working with a book that is laid out in spread format.  The images for one page often spill out onto the adjacent page.  When I go to export to single page pdf, the ends of images from one page are visible on the other page.

I tried altering the ID doc setup to single page, but then I have a bleed on all 4 sides of every page.

The only thing I can think to do is return to the original images in Illustrator, create a page-sized document, lay them out on the document, and then create a page-sized clipping mask.

There's got to be an easier way, hasn't there?
