Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:04 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thank you...."reading preferences" that takes 3 minutes, then it zips past the other initializing. I've had photoshop since version 3 and never saw this. Jeff

3. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Curt Y Jun 14, 2012 7:09 PM (in response to Mediadude8)REset the preferences. On Win start PS and immediately hold down Ctr; + alt + shift keys. Will get a reset window. Say yes.

4. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Noel Carboni Jun 14, 2012 7:10 PM (in response to Mediadude8)Try resetting the preferences to defaults:
Press and hold Control - Shift - Alt instantly after cold-starting Photoshop. If you get the keys down quickly enough you will be prompted to confirm deletion of the current preferences. Hopefully that will take less than 3 minutes.
With any luck, you'll find the system will thereafter start up quickly.
I kind of suspect the UNC name for some network device that was once available but is not available now has managed to be saved in there somehow, and it's having to time out before coming up.

5. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:12 PM (in response to Curt Y)That's the first thing I did and the window came up and hit yes on delete preferences. I even changed the cache drives so that it wasn't C. I'm one of those people that tries everything before I post. if I go to task manager during ps launch, it says photoshop not responding. Jeff

6. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:13 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)It was just installed two days ago and haven't used the computer for months before that, so a file was never openend in the new CS6 since install. Jeff

7. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Noel Carboni Jun 14, 2012 7:17 PM (in response to Mediadude8)Have you tried creating a new, different user account to see if that would clear things up?
I'm wondering if maybe somehow you have permissions problems getting to the user-specific files/folder that Photoshop would be trying to access at startup.

8. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:25 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)funny you said that, I was going to start a new user account, just because I'm starting fresh and had Premiere CS 5.5 issues in the past. I will try that and post right away. thank you both for your time...it's appreciated. Jeff

9. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Curt Y Jun 14, 2012 7:27 PM (in response to Mediadude8)Do you have any 3rd party plugins or fonts on the laptop?
-
10. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:34 PM (in response to Curt Y)no plug ins for photoshop, just premiere and all legit ones that i purchased. there are some cheapo free fonts, but would that make it hang on launch? not sure where the loading fonts plays in the launch process. going to make new user account.

11. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:39 PM (in response to Mediadude8)I switched back to the first account I made called "administrator". still hangs in the same place. however that wasn't a new account. I'll try that now.

12. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 7:52 PM (in response to Mediadude8)New user account as Admin, 3 minutes and 20 seconds to open PS. I guess I'll call Adobe tomorrow. thanks again for your time tonight. Jeff

13. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Noel Carboni Jun 14, 2012 7:55 PM (in response to Mediadude8)Best of luck with Adobe.
I did have one more thought: Have a look in your Windows event logs to see that you're not taking disk errors or something.-Noel

14. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Curt Y Jun 14, 2012 7:56 PM (in response to Mediadude8)Might try to delete 3rd party plugins and fonts and see it that makes a difference.
Also, do you have a normal printer for default? Networked ones can can delay in bootup.
How about a TWAIN driver. Sometimes that can cause problmes.

15. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 8:09 PM (in response to Curt Y)this laptop is dedicated to video editing...very few programs on it. No events that are linked to start times when I launched PS. I removed the network printer, same issue. there is a scanner driver loaded for an epson scanner, but it's been there for 6 months and 5.5 worked fine, same with the fonts. No photoshop plug ins at all. I didn't install the PS 32 bit since it's a 64 bit machine...so I can't test that out.

16. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 8:14 PM (in response to Mediadude8)Could PS 5.5 affect it all? all of the functions work fast in 6 once it's up and running, but 3 minutes will really cut into productivity and it brings the machine to a halt while trying to launch. Premiere and After Effects are much more memory intensive and they open really fast.

17. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Curt Y Jun 14, 2012 8:27 PM (in response to Mediadude8)No, CS 5 will have to effect.
CS6 is looking for something, can not find it and gives up. You just have to figure out what it is looking for.

18. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 8:43 PM (in response to Curt Y)Hopefully with the tens of thousands I've given Adobe over the years, they can find it :-) Thank you once again. I'll post if they can help me, in case it might help someone else. nite. Jeff

19. Re: cs6 hangs on launch
Mediadude8 Jun 14, 2012 10:02 PM (in response to Mediadude8)I uninstalled PS CS6 and then reinstalled it along with the 32 bit version. when completed a message came up saying the 64 bit version could not install with a whole page of messages, for the hell of it I clicked on the icon...it worked. 64bit opened in 3 seconds instead of 3 minutes. at least it works. thanks again.
