    Entering text

    Rodieck Community Member

I'm currently running AI CS6.  In previous releases, when I wanted to start entering text at a certain point (with the regular type tool) I would position the I-beam at the vertical line where I wanted to start, and with the little horizonal line of the I-beam on the horizontal line where I wanted to start, and click.  But in CS6, that click seems to position the text on the left-most dotted line surrounding the I-beam, rather on the I-beam itself.  Is there some parameter I can set so that the I-beam determines the starting point of text?  Or do I just need to adjust my thinking to a different way?

You might have Snap to Grid or Snap to Point on or Pixel Preview on. Look for these in the View menu.

            Rodieck,

Just to be clear, when you mention that you "start entering text at a certain point" are you referring to using the type tool to a) edit an existing text field already populated with text, b) draw the bounding box for a new text field, or c) single-click on your artboard to create a text field.

            a)

            b)

            c)

I really hope those pictures make sense, just trying to understand your issue fully.

I don't have my second laptop with CS5.5 on it, but I see that the Type Tool in CS6 has the I-beam and then a small bounding box around it with a black triangle in the upper left corner. I looked in preferences to see if cursors could be adjusted and could not find anything myself. Someone else may know a way to do this, but I would suggest just getting comfortable with starting your text fields from the black triangle in the upper left corner of the Type tool.

            I hope this helps,

            Michael

Hi, Scott.  I do have "Snap to Point" turned on, but this is my normal way of operating, in CS5 as well.  The other two are both off.

Hi, majarrott.  I'm talking about using the text tool to "c) single-click on your artboard to create a text field."  I can get used to this new way  if necessary.  But I don't understand why the change was made -- i.e., what advantage it might have.
