Sharon Huang Jul 12, 2012 10:26 AM (in response to SteveH59)Hi Steve
When I tried out your method with Layer>new>layer via cut, the selection that I cut out was automatically put to a new layer on the top. The two layers seem to blend pretty seamlessly on my image.
But I have another way of doing this that you should try out and it is fairly simple. First duplicate the layer. Then select with the marquee tool the portion you want to cut out; press delete. Keeping the same selection, go up to Select> inverse. Select the 2nd layer and click delete again. Your top and bottom layers will be divided into 2 portions and should be seamless. I hope this helps!

Herugrim123 Jul 12, 2012 10:28 AM (in response to SteveH59)After you have hit layer via copy, go back to the oringinal layer and and CTRL/CMD click the layer thumbnail of the new layer ( which will re position your original selection ) and hit layer via copy again. You will now have your original layer, the 'cut out' and the border on 3 layers.

SteveH59 Jul 12, 2012 11:34 AM (in response to Sharon Huang)Hello Sharon
Thank you for your post.
Can I just clarify? After I have duplicated the layer, I select part of the image (from left to right) using the marquee tool, pressed delete and then Select | Inverse. When I do that, I can see the right-hand side of the image pasted in what is my Background copy layer.
Then, I duplicate the Background again, and with the marquee selected over the right-hand portion of the image, I click delete and then Select | Inverse.
I think the Select | Inverse confused me a bit, but at the moment in the Layers panel I have the original Background, Background copy (with the right-hand part of the image pasted in), and now Background copy 2 with the left-hand part of the image pasted into that.Very many thanks.

conroy Jul 12, 2012 6:48 PM (in response to SteveH59)Here's an easy way to get the three layers. If your using Windows, substitute Ctrl for Cmd:
Open the JPEG
Press Cmd+J
Marquee the selection (you possibly want to ensure Feather is 0)
Press Shift+Cmd+J
