Yes, you're doing it wrong. The resolution becomes screen resolution when you copy from Photoshop. You need to choose File > Place and place the Photoshop file.
Alternatively, you can use Adobe Bridge. From Bridge or MiniBridge, you can drag images into InDesign. But NOT from Photoshop.
and it may APPEAR lower resolution in the preview, depending on your view settings. By default ID uses "Typical" dispaly quality, which is a low-res proxy. Try View > Display Performance > High Quality Display, and you may want to change this in your preferences as well.
Sure enough, it was just on a Low quality display setting. Thanks Peter
