Hi there -
If you go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, and select "Panel Menus" from the "Shortcuts For" dropdown menu, you can set (or change) shortcuts for the Timeline panel.
**EDIT: Couldn't seem to find the spacebar shortcut for play/stop in this menu...still trying to find a solution for you. Alternatively, you can uncheck Enable Timeline Shortcuts Keys from the Timeline panel to disable the shortcuts.
I have the Enable Timeline Shortcut Keys button unchecked, and spacebar still does playback.
Unfortunately there seems to be no way to reassign the playback or the temporary move tool that the spacebar provides (holding it switches to the Hand tool, releasing reverts to the tool being used previously). I use the spacebar shortcut constantly because of the efficiency of being able to move the canvas quickly when I am zoomed in and releasing to immediately go back to my brush tool. (As opposed to pressing "H" to switch to the Hand tool, and then having to press "B" to go back to brush.)
I have the same problem as JLW11Hi. I usually use the Frame Animation timeline window, which doens't even have the "enable Timeline Shortcut Keys" option in the pop-out panel. I've even swtiched to the Video animation and checked / unchecked the enable timeline shortcut keys option and it has no effect.
You can save keyboard shortcuts with Workspaces, which is handy seing as they all seem to be used up. So you could select the motion Workspace, and remove the Space bar shortcut, then resave the Motion workspace with Keyboard shortuts checked.
When you return to Essentuals (if that is your usual workspace), you'll need to reset that workspace to retrieve the space bar for pan shortcut.
the problem is I have no way of removing or changing the space bar shortcut. It doesn't appear in any of my hotkey settings.
Ahhh.. I see what you mean. I wonder if Photoshop is using Windows shortcuts? I can't find how to change them, but you can disable them. It would need to be a very simple thing to toggle them on or off because it would be a catastrophe being permanently without them!

Hi! I had the same problem with SPACE when I want to move things in a very fast way (while drawing) and it inconveniently start to PLAY my timeline.
And Photoshop doesn´t allow to change the keys for PLAY in the Shortcuts Panel.
But I have manage a solution for this issue!!!
When you hold SHIFT and press SPACE it didn´t activate the PLAY action. You can press these keys very quickly and it still doesn´t start to PLAY the timeline. So, the HAND/MOVE tool is free for use again, yey!
But pressing these two keys is not very practical as pressing only the SPACE key, so I went to my WACOM preferences and configurate ONE of the panel buttons to activate the SHIFT+SPACE keys!!! Now it´s (almost) perfect again!!
I´m not used to use the side buttons at my Wacom, but I think I can live with it until Adobe solve these problem in other way.
Sorry about my english (not my native language), but I hope these hint can help who is having the same problem!
Hi JustinFace and everyone else with this problem. It's 2017 now and I was wondering if anybody happened to find a workaround for this? Like did anybody figure out how to disable spacebar as playback on the time line?
Okay, I know this was an old post, but you actually solved my problem, thanks! I frequently use wacom sidebar buttons, so this was the perfect solution for me.
Unbelievable, adobe did nothing in this 5 years..
Maybe they are just telling us that drawing animations with photoshop is not a good idea?
