flashplayer download issue

i downloaded the adobe flashplayer numerouis times- each time it indicates a successful installation- and shows up on my program list as installed. but whenever i try to view a video (on yahoo news for example) i cannot- it shows the icon that i  need to install the flashplayer. please help this has been going on for weeks!
