I have created a paragraph style to use when placing text previously from a Microsoft Word document into my InDesign document. I set this up the same way my predecessor set up all the Paragraph Styles before me. However, this new style doesn't seem to be able to make adjustments when it comes to font type. The new Style is supposed to make text Adobe Garamond Pro Bold, with all ligatures, but it does not adjust when parts of text were originally italicized (so does not convert them into Bold Italic). Please advise on how to do this.
During the Word Place (import), if you toggle Show Options, Preserve Local Overrides is enabled; Italic's (and other character overrides) applied to the Word doc are preserved. This is useful if after you place/import the document, you want to apply an Ital Character style.
If you highlight the text, you will see a Plus sign in your Para Style; this indicates local overrides, not triggered by an InDesign Character Style. The Para Style panel flydown will remove the overrides, or hold Alt and click the Style to clear the overrides.
But; you might want to retain those overrides - There are scripts available, or it can be done with a Find/Change
Find > Leave the find and replace fields blank, use the Character attributes options at the bottom of the find dialog to apply a Character Style
