1. Re: some PDFs don't display bookmark icon/panel
Bill@VT Aug 22, 2012 8:15 PM (in response to Angela French)Then how did you create the PDFs? There are differences in the methods and the bookmarks are one of the differences. Did you check the preferences and such also. What version of WORD and Acrobat are you using?
If the PDF is created with the print process, no bookmarks are created. PDF Maker is required to get bookmarks. However some folks also use WORD as a simple typewriter except for changing fonts and bold, etc. If no styles are used, then bookmarks may likely not be created either. So a lot depends on how the WORD file is created and then converted to PDF. Without such knowledge, it is difficult to draw other conclusions.

Geo F Aug 22, 2012 12:32 PM (in response to Angela French)In File / Properties / Initial View - the Bookmarks Panel and Page selection should be set.
It's strange that it's doing it for some documents and not others, so you might tell us more about:
whether the same person is creating the PDFs, are they doing it from the Create PDF button in Word, and which versions you're using.
One thing that's tripped me up: if you happen to close the PDF with the Bookmarks closed, I think it retains that view. I'm not a thousand percent sure. But any subsequent users who open the PDF, however, they'll get the bookmarks. I'm sure others will confirm or deny.

3. Re: some PDFs don't display bookmark icon/panel
Angela French Aug 23, 2012 8:54 AM (in response to Geo F)Two of us are making the PDFs using MS Word 2010. We do the Save As PDF method. The word documents are created using correct/appropriate heading structure. As an experiment, I launched Acrobat X Pro and opened the original Word file in question. It automatically turns it into a PDF. Still no bookmark icon. I have had others test the link to see if the PDF opens with bookmarks and it does not.
Here is one example of the PDF without bookmarks: http://sbctc.edu/college/it/PPMS_ATOverview.pdf
Here is one with bookmarks: http://sbctc.edu/college/it/PPMS_ControlTablesOverview.pdf
While both of these documents are short and usability is not greatly affected with or without bookmarks, others are quite long.
Thank you for any advice.

dave_m_k Aug 23, 2012 1:57 PM (in response to Angela French)Hi Angela,
The file without bookmarks was created using Microsoft's PDF creation utility. (File > Save as > PDF)
The file with bookmarks was created with Adobe's PDFMaker for Word. (File > Save as Adobe PDF or using the PDFMaker ribbon.
Try recreating your first file using our technology and your bookmarks should be present.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

5. Re: some PDFs don't display bookmark icon/panel
Angela French Aug 23, 2012 2:06 PM (in response to dave_m_k)David - yes that was it! I have Acrobat X on my computer and so in MS Word I have the Save as PDF option. My co-worker does not and thus does the Save As > pdf.
Thank you for solving this mystery!

Angela French Aug 23, 2012 2:30 PM (in response to dave_m_k)David, was there someway you could tell by looking at the documents how they were created?

dave_m_k Aug 24, 2012 11:38 AM (in response to Angela French)Angela,
Sure thing! Choose File > Properties when the document is open within Acrobat or Adobe Reader. On the Description tab, you'll see the 'PDF Producer'. This will tell you what application generated the PDF.
