Im kinda new to after effects but I do know my way around. My problem is that I have a 1.2GB FRAPS file that I want to add some effects to but after adding it into the comp and clicking preview I get about 15 seconds of good video but after that the green render bar just goes away. I look at mu ram usage and that 15 seconds comes out at 11GB on the ram. Why does this happen?
The file it 720p and 32 seconds long and comes out at 1.2GB, so shouldn't the ram file be 1.2GB? The ram im using is corsair vengeance 1600mhz ddr3 4gb x4. Im also using CS6.
Actually, that sounds about just right for a ram preview at 720. I'll guess you have 16 gigs, right?
yes 4 4Gb sticks
The FRAPS codec creates a compressed video file. After Effects decompresses video in order to process it, and it stores that video in an uncompressed form in RAM to preview. That's why your smaller file expands to a large amount of RAM required for preview.
After Effects is not designed to play long streams of video in realtime. RAM preview's purpose is to build short preview segments to check your work. To view long segments, render a file from the Render Queue.
