Jon-M-Spear Aug 26, 2012 5:44 AM (in response to PPeters61)If you want to use onLocation, you'll need to use CS5.5 or below. It's not included in CS6. I had a great deal of success with OL and my Z1 via the firewire. What difficulties have you encountered?
Neither Premiere Pro nor Prelude are capture applications.
I've been investigating the very same thing, and the way to go seems to be to use either a Blackmagic Intensity box or a Matrox MX2 mini (at the entry level end of the market). The Blackmagic seems to be picky about which PC chipset it likes!

PPeters61 Aug 26, 2012 2:06 PM (in response to Jon-M-Spear)It's been a year or more since we tried to use onLocation, so I'm doing this from memory. As I recall, we could never get it to recognize the camera. I tried the trial version of CS5, but it's hobbled to not work with the Z1, so I never could prove that a newer version would work. I'm willing to move from CS3 to CS5.5, but I'm nervous about spending the money without a better feeling that it's going to work.
I'm working with a small church, so budget is always an issue. If we have to continue to capture off tape, we'll do it. However, I'd prefer to skip the tape. Saving wear on the tape transport is a good thing for extending the life of our Z1.

Maybe not Prelude, but PP is fully capable of capturing, it doesn't really care if it's from tape or a live signal.

Jon-M-Spear Aug 26, 2012 2:33 PM (in response to JSS1138)We're talking live capture here.

JSS1138 Aug 26, 2012 2:33 PM (in response to Jon-M-Spear)Yes, I know. The signal coming over FireWire is no different whether it comes off tape or a live feed, and PP can capture it either way.

Jon-M-Spear Aug 26, 2012 2:53 PM (in response to JSS1138)I guess that's true.

PPeters61 Aug 26, 2012 3:07 PM (in response to Jon-M-Spear)I've tried live capture with Premiere Pro CS3 twice. Both times the audio got out of sync with the video.
I've never had that problem when capturing from tape, through I've heard rare reports of other people that have.

Jack Banatoni Aug 26, 2012 4:33 PM (in response to PPeters61)Last time I had to do that was CS2, but Premiere could "live capture". I used it often with no issues.
PPeters61: You may want to see if you have a local cable access station where you can borrow cameras/recording gear. They're usually friendly to non-profit organizations.
