41. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
pkazmercyk Jan 4, 2013 3:52 PM (in response to Sandeep V.)Hi. Thanks in advance for your attention to this matter. At the risk of being repetitive, just want to present the variables I see in the issue as it affects me in the hope it may help you and others. I'm using Creative Suite 5.5 on my Apple Mac Pro desktop and had been on OS 10.7 (Lion) since the summer. All of my InDesign to Acrobat PDFs had been fine both in terms of display and printing.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) two days ago. Yesterday, I also upgraded from an old Apple Cinema display to a new NEC PA271W-BK (calibrated only using NEC's MutliProfiler software for initial setup). I made my first ID to Acrobat PDF today and was shocked at the results. The color in the PDF was not only very pale, but very yellow overall--nowhere near the native ID file and not what I would have gotten while still running OS 10.7.
While my first thought was the monitor, when I viewed the native ID file side by side with the PDF, there was a world of difference. Opening the PDF in Mac Preview showed the PDF as expected--not dead on to the ID file, but much, much closer.
One other variable: I moved a PDF to a different Mac, an iMac (also running 10.8.2) and viewed the PDF in Acrobat Reader 11.0.0 and it displays well, but the same PDF, viewed in Reader 11 on my Mac Pro is pale with the yellow cast. (This would seem to point to a calibration issue, but one only affecting Acrobat and not other Adobe apps).
I will monitor this thread and can provide additional info if it will be helpful.

twsphoto Jan 8, 2013 1:19 PM (in response to Was DYP)I don't think anyone knows. As you can see in the thread someone from Adobe is on the game, but nobody has heard anything back yet. The jist of the problem seems a viewing issue, that the colors in the PDF are accurate even if they don't display properly. Keep an eye on this thread for further info!

44. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
Ian.C.Dav Jan 8, 2013 2:31 PM (in response to twsphoto)Hi Everyone,
I actually know what is going on. Sandeep and I spent many hours going through the problem together and indentified a bug in Acrobat 10.1.4/11.0. Initially the problem was that Adobe were unable to recreate the problem in the testing lab. This transpired with Adobe testing using the latest Apple kit with built in monitors (all using sRGB profile). Those of us with calibrated NEC monitors etc saw problems immediately. I agree with Rick Meikle in this forum that Acrobat is ignoring the display profile and defaulting to sRGB. Sandeep is a really smart guy. I'm relieved this has been identified and have been able to tell my team that something is going to be done.
Unfortunately I don't think this fix will be made available in either 10.1.5 or 11.0.1 as the release window would be too tight for testing but don't take my word for it.
I previously asked Sandeep if he could post an update to everyone in the forum about this so I'll remind him to do this.
Regards
Ian

pkazmercyk Jan 8, 2013 2:48 PM (in response to Ian.C.Dav)Hi Ian. Thanks very much for the update, and thanks to Sandeep for jumping in on this issue and spending your time on it. Since more than one poster (including myself) referred to NEC monitors, I wondered if that might be a relevant variable. Very much appreciate you keeping us posted on all of this!

46. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
Rick Meikle Jan 8, 2013 5:57 PM (in response to Was DYP)Versions 10.1.5 and 11.0.01 do not fix the problem. (It would have been surprising to see the fix this soon.) As Ian noted, the problem is that the current version of Acrobat (and Reader) fail to use the display profile set in System Preferences > Displays > Color to correctly display the colors in a PDF file. (There's probably a similar scenario for Windows users.) Fortunately, the problem does not affect CMYK print output. (Don't know if Acrobat also ignores printer profiles for outputting RGB colors.)
The more your display profile deviates from whatever Acrobat is using to display colors--my guess is it's the default color workflow settings for Windows and recent Macs (sRGB/6500K/2.2 gamma)--the greater difference you will see between your PDF files and the originating files. My guess is that most users who stick with a system's default display settings (e.g., an iMac out of the box) won't see much or any difference.
Whether or not the display profile problem affects you, color management problems may also be in play. If so, the two most obvious things to do are 1) calibrate your display and/or 2) synchronize your Creative Suite on the appropriate color workflow.
In my experience, the only effective way to calibrate a display is with a display calibration system that measures what your display puts out (with some kind of sensor that hangs on the screen) and builds a custom display profile that adjusts the display output to be more accurate. Anything short of that is unlikely to get the job done.
Ironically, until the display profile problem is fixed, calibrating your display may amplify the on screen color differences between your PDFs and originating files, especially if you calibrate for traditional print settings (Adobe RGB/5000K/1.8 gamma). That's because the display profile will be ignored by Acrobat.

Sandeep V. Jan 9, 2013 12:29 PM (in response to Ian.C.Dav)Hello Everyone!
A bug has been logged for this issue and Acrobat product engineering is working on it. Initially, I was using the default calibrated profile of Apple or sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and couldn't reproduce the issue. But as I mentioned in my previous post, custom profile shows the odd behavior. I can't say what's happening in the background but it definitely doesn't seem normal. I don't have an ETA on the fix but I can assure you that our product engineering team has already started testing it and will consider every possibility to fix it as soon as possible.
Ian – Thank you for helping me in reproducing it.
Rick- Information that you provided was very helpful. Thanks for being so patient.
Happy 2013!

twsphoto Feb 1, 2013 12:55 PM (in response to Sandeep V.)Not sure if the latest 10.1.5 updater was to help with this, but it doesn't. I just did a fresh install of Mountain Lion, all updates accomplished, system is running just fine, CS5.5 is too, and still Acrobat shows the muted color, like before. Just thought I'd let you know.
We all do, of course, thank you for your assistance. Maybe this latest update was ahead of the fix for this, but either way, at least we all know someone's on the game!!

55. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
missinghorse Mar 4, 2013 8:27 AM (in response to Steve Werner)I may be late to this issue, but have been noticing a big colour difference when viewing the same PDF under to same color setting file in Acrobat 9 and 11 Pro!
When I extract the image into Photoshop CS6 and assign the same profile it matches Acrobat 9.
This happens to PDFs with and without an PDF X output intent.
I have proofed pages using a very accurate rip to ISO 12647/7 and the proofs match the Acrobat 9 Pro pages on screen, the screen is an EIZO CG 243W.
So it seems that Acrobat 9 Pro is accurate to the rest of CS and Acrobat 11 colour management is not working correctly? So very real issues if trying to softproof using Acrobat 10 Pro.

twsphoto Mar 4, 2013 8:38 AM (in response to missinghorse)You've pretty much hit the nail on the color managed head! Adobe is supposedly working on this mess, we're all waiting for a remedy.
Apparently, though, the colors are just fine in the PDFs, it's a viewing issue. Like you said, 9 is fine, but 10+ versions aren't.

missinghorse Mar 4, 2013 9:24 AM (in response to twsphoto)Yes, it seems to be a complete mess. And taking an age to put right. Do not like to think about the issues its creating, and the money wasted with professional users and their clients!! And I thought soft proofing was the way ahead!

58. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
aktivomat Mar 4, 2013 9:34 AM (in response to missinghorse)i know, i already posted this solution many month ago, but it seems that not so many people use the little program "colorfaker" (https://github.com/iccir/ColorFaker) to solve this problem. so i post it again because i'm working with it (in a really high-end colormanagment workflow) now for the last few month and it works like charm! especially with an external hardware calibrated monitore (quato intelli proof) it switch back the whole os x colormanagement behaviour like befor 10.8. everything's perfect. just give it a try. just a suggestion.
-
59. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
missinghorse Mar 4, 2013 9:46 AM (in response to aktivomat)Not sure from what I read that this is a OS 10.8 issue. Acrobat 9 is OK. Acrobat 10 and 11 are not, so the problem seems to be Adobes I think?
-
60. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
aktivomat Mar 4, 2013 10:00 AM (in response to missinghorse)that's not for sure. it seems it's also an os 10.8 issue. because there is no issue with acrobat 10 and os 10.7 for example. and it's a fact that if you simulate the behaviour of before 10.8 with colorfake everything's fine. other discussions here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4170423 and here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4138077?start=15&tstart=0 and here http://www.hilfdirselbst.ch/foren/_P499280.html. but maybe it's a bit of both (adobe and acrobat) and i think that's the reasson why there's no solution yet. because both sides say it's the other sides fault :-) had contact with both supports and that's the info so far...

61. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
missinghorse Mar 4, 2013 10:25 AM (in response to aktivomat)Interesting. Also seems related to the type of screen used. Noticed little difference on my MacBookPro. Lots on my MacPro and EIZO! wide gamut screen. Do you think the display profile is an issue?
-
62. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 4, 2013 10:29 AM (in response to aktivomat)I know about Colorfaker, but I don't think I should have to add another application to solve what seems to be an Adobe issue, or at least accordiong to the Adobe guy who's posted in this thread. Custom display profiles are where he thinks the problem lies, but so far no fix. If Apple is at fault, then Adobe and Apple should duke it out until they figure it out. The software always worked fine in Snow Leopard, but not now. That it's simply a viewing issue is fine, I can output my PDFs from ID and know they're correct, and after seeing and comparing new output to previous output they are correct, but I would like to see accurate color when in Acrobat, it's what I paid to see.
I'd bet Adobe is indeed working on this, patience is a virtue well heeded for the time being.

63. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 4, 2013 10:34 AM (in response to missinghorse)Same results here. My new MB Pro AG display shows the same problem as my Mac Pro + Eizo CG241 combo shows. I'm on Acrobat 10.1.6, never did the 11 upgrade.
-
64. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
aktivomat Mar 4, 2013 10:35 AM (in response to missinghorse)yes. you can see the issue much more on a wide gamut screen. on an imac or on a macbook for example it seems almost fine... almost!
and twsphoto, for sure colorfaker is no "long-time-solution". but i had my first contact to the adobe support in september 2012 (!!) because of this issue... and no solution yet. so i prefere a solution that really works instead of waiting another year :-)

65. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 4, 2013 10:38 AM (in response to aktivomat)Yeah, I started this thread September 1, 2012. Sheesh, you'd think we'd see something by now.
Because this is a viewing issue and not a coding issue, I'm going to still wait instead of loading Colorfaker. I appreciate your input and kudos for that app, but just don't want to load something when I shouldn't have to. I may change my mind on that opinion at some point!!

66. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
missinghorse Mar 5, 2013 1:33 AM (in response to twsphoto)Going to a Adobe function today so will bring this up. I have been thinking more re this and increasingly think it is an Adobe issue. Acrobat 9 Pro works correctly with OS 10.8. Acrobat 10/11 Pro do not. So one would think that the anwser for Adobe would be to check to difference in the colour managment handling between 9 and 10/11. Then issue an update/back date re colour to how 9 handled colour managment. It been an very long time so far and this is area mission critical to many CS users who need and expect correct colour across all CS software via Bridge.

67. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 5, 2013 5:32 AM (in response to missinghorse)I agree, but there is a possibility that Apple changed something that mucked up the waters, too. Hard to tell, but your plan is a good one, speak directly to the people who made the software. Hopefully somebody will solve this, as though it seems only a viewing issue, it should work, that's what we pay for.

JGoahead Mar 24, 2013 11:00 AM (in response to twsphoto)Today was update to Adobe Acrobat X 10.1.6... Nothing has changed... Acrobat X still is not for pro work. Displayed colours are not proper. This is a joke...

69. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 25, 2013 11:28 AM (in response to JGoahead)Yeah, you got that right. And so far no fix, nor is there any word about it. Colorfaker is still a possibility, but we shouldn't have to use that to fix a pro app such as this. Especially in a PDF workflow world. What a mess. Just glad Mac OS>Preview sees the right colors, or at least closer than Acrobat does.

70. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
ShashtinS Mar 25, 2013 12:18 PM (in response to twsphoto)I am using InDesign (CS6) with Lion. My pdf file looks fine in Acrobat, but the job came back from the professional printer extremely flat/dull. I've used the printer many times, and this has not happened before. If I preview the file in Acrobat using Advanced/Print Production/Flattener preview, it looks dull as it does when printed. The only difference in my process is that I have upgraded software to CS6 and Lion. Anyone know what is going on?

71. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 25, 2013 12:40 PM (in response to ShashtinS)Are the colors in the doc CMYK process, or do you have Pantones, etc.?
This thread is regarding a viewing issue in Acrobat Pro 10.1.6 and Mountain Lion. It seems Acrobat is defaulting to sRGB when viewing a PDF, and not using the calibrated display profile. When I was in Snow Leopard, all was fine. But now it's not, for any of us. I've not had one single problem from this from my printer, all the file outputs look as they did when they were output in SLeopard. As I said, it's a viewing issue, or is according to the Adobe guy who's somewhere on this thread.
How this translates to your issue, I don't know. The one thing I'd recommend is going to Mountain Lion so you're in the latest OS for CS6. I've read on some forums that CS6 likes the newest OS. Not sure if that's true or not, but it might be a place to start. Also, are your Color Settings synch'd throughout your CS Suite?
Are we having fun now!

72. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
missinghorse Mar 25, 2013 3:54 PM (in response to twsphoto)The bug is also in Acrobat Pro 11. Also I think it is using the display profile but the simulation profile and output intents in PDF X files are not working correctly?
-
73. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
ShashtinS Mar 25, 2013 3:57 PM (in response to twsphoto)Thanks twsphoto. After hours of trying to troubleshoot in CS6, I ended up saving my ID file down from CS6 to CS4 and flattening/exporting from there to pdf. That solved the problem. I'm happy the problem is solved, but very frustrated that i'ts not working correctly in CS6. Very problematic to not be able to have documents print correctly from CS6.
My color settings were synced. Seemed to be a problem with transparency flattening in CS6....

74. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 25, 2013 4:43 PM (in response to ShashtinS)I've heard CS6 has some issues with something, it's tough to keep it all straight any more. Solve one thing and two others pop up. I suppose, in defense of Adobe and Apple, that with all the coding that's in this software it's remarkable it works as well as it does. Still, this color/Acrobat thing is a stumper, and I hope Adobe is still aware of it. I find Apple's simple Preview actually makes the PDFs look almost normal. Free app, can't beat it in a pinch.
I'm just trusitng the actual ID to PDF color voodoo is fine, and it seems to be. I have a printer I use for all of my files and they're pretty consistent. The output of the same materials over the last three years looks just the same. Lucky me on this one.
I wonder if Adobe will chime in now that there's activity in the thread? I wish they would.

76. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
Norbert Heyl Mar 26, 2013 2:36 AM (in response to twsphoto)I have the same issue on my system: OS X 10.8.2 - Nec Lcd3090WQXi - Acrobat 10.1.6. Monitor is hardware calibrated and then profiled with i1Profiler.
Pdfs are previewing well in InDesign, photoshop and Apple Preview. Acrobat shows dull colors. I proofed a pdf (PDF X-3:2002) with EFI xPress on another computer system (OS X 10.7.5). The printed proof lies inside the tolerance of the Fogra standard (mesasued with spectro proofer). The proof shows exactly the same colors as in Indesign or Photoshop on the calibrated/profiled NEC monitor.
Preview in xPress and Acrobat 9 (on the computer with OS X 10.7.5) was also o.k - same colors ans the certified proof.
Please allow a personal remark: This is an unacceptable situation for professional software makers as Adobe and Apple! Even more so considering that Acrobat X and OS X 10.8 have been released so many months ago!

77. Re: Color issues in Mountain Lion with Acrobat Pro
twsphoto Mar 26, 2013 5:05 AM (in response to Norbert Heyl)Personal remarks welcome, I hope Adobe is listening. We're stuck in the muck with this situation, depending upon companies doing their jobs to make their products work so we can make a living with what we paid for. Strange, this problem doesn't seem to be that insurmountable. I'm not a programmer, but it still seems minor compared to other s/w problems that have been overcome over the years. Maybe by the time Acrobat 18 comes along it'll be solved? Sometimes, sarcasm helps. At least it makes me feel better to write it!
