However, when I use a conventional "S-curve" in the curves adjustment, the entire image has more contrast, not just the midtones. I'm looking for a curves adjustment that will have a similar effect as the "Clarity" slider in ACR. Just to give a bit more pop to the image to compensate for what happens when printing to most matte substrates. Is it even possible? Thanks.

I am familiar with that, and it works great. Isn't that basically what the "Clarity" slider does in ACR?
But I have trouble with it conflicting with my general output sharpening in my Print Output Group of adjustments (using Smart Sharpen w. advanced settings).
