On a Mac one can edit the names with ColorSync Utility – no idea about Windows.
But aside from renaming the profiles you could try putting them in the Recommended-folder (/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/Recommended on a Mac, but I assume Windows has a similar folder).
There is a free utility called ICC Rename, you can find it here http://english.felix-schoeller-di.com/staticsite/staticsite.php?menuid=264&topmenu=80
Runs as a standalone exe file not requiring an installer. Have not tried it but might be just what you are looking for
Just be careful you don't confuse things mightily by renaming standard profiles.
Some of the manufacturers out there really make it tough to figure out a profile - with Ilford paper profiles probably being one of the worse. You need a translation table to make sure you are picking the right paper profile.
I profile my own papers and can name my profiles to something meaningful and recognizable; Ilford IGGFS13_EPR7880_PSPPn.icc versus ILF_Glossy_7880
