I need lots of storage
For what purpose? On-line, near-line, backup? Why external and not internal? On what platform? What are your hardware specs? What is 'lots', 4 TB or 48 TB or 2 PB?
Hello thanks for your reply
At this point I need 12TB I average about 2Tb per year for video editing
I was looking at external since its more portable but if internal storage are faster I would rather get that, not sure if speed maters if its internal or external.
My hardware specs are outdated and I'm looking to upgrade.
Thanks for your time
Most professional editors and facilities I know prefer external storage for a variety of reasons.
1. More storage and the ability to chain raid systems together if need be
2. Reduced heat build up within the computer enclosure which can be problematic
3. If your raid needs repairs you dont lose your entire computer.
I have worked in small and large facilities and NEVER have seen internal raids used for the above reasons. In my home studio, for the record, I have a Dulce DQg2 16TB raid that achieves 1100MB/sec. read and 1000/MBsec. write speeds with 1080P media.
If you make sure you have SFF-8088 cables to connect between the internal raid controller and the external disk cabinet, you have the same speed as internal, but the portability of external. There are some that use internal hot-swappable arrays, like here: http://ppbm7.com/index.php/intro-part-1 .This approach alleviates all three of Lasvideo's drawbacks about internal solutions.
