The properties panel will show the masks only when they are created.
You can easily create a mask from the bottom of the layers panel, the icon looks like a circle inside a rectangle.
If you do have a selection active when you click it, it will be used as the mask.
If you Option(mac)/Alt(Pc)+click the button, it will create an inverted mask (or an "hide all") mask.
You can also add a mask from the menu Layers>Layer Mask>Hide all or Reveal all.

Hi, Yes I got that far but can't find how to find the mask type selection
(eg pixel versus vector etc).
Layer - Layer Mask - and choose one of the submenu selections.
Cmd/Ctrl-click the mask button to create vector mask.
