InDesign CS5.5 Toolbars missing and keys don't work

I have been using InDesign CS 5.5 for a couple of years now, and am very happy with it.  Today, I started to create a new document and found that there were no toolbars available, other than the menu bar, when I started up the program. I found and positioned these and started by pasting in some graphics.  Ctrl-V didn't work, so I used Edit, Paste instead.  Then I typed some text and found that the Return key didn't work either, nor Tab, nor the arrow keys...  I abandoned this document and loaded up a publication that I created a couple of weeks ago, with the same result.  No toolbars, and the Return key (on the main keyboard) didn't work, nor the other keys I mentioned.  The keyboard works fine in all other applications.

I have rebooted the computer and reloaded InDesign.  I have deleted (actually renamed) the InDesign Defaults file as suggested in the FAQ (I couldn't find a SavedData file).

I am running a quad core desktop PC with Windows 7 Home Premium, SP-1.
