Dual-Mono only one channel on insert, two if dragged to timeline

I set up Premiere Pro to import my AVCHD files as dual mono. It works with the following exception. If I open a file from the media browser in the source monitor and define in and out ports, when I insert it into the timeline I only get one audio (L) in Audio track 1. If I drag the whole clip into the timeline, I get both track one and track two in the timeline. This is not good because I have to edit right on the timeline instead of using the source monitor as expected, making editing difficult.

Any clues on this? I use Premiere Pro 6.
