Simple PHP to Flex Security Question

I have a flex applictaion which needs to read data from an XML file and then parse it. To do this, I make a call to a PHP file which reads in the file data, and then returns it in XML format. My problem is, this is sensitive data containing usernames and passwords etc, and should not be easily got at by the user using a program like Charles.

Therefore, the solution seems to be to encode the data or encrypt it, so anyone seeing it has no use for it.

My question is, how can I protect this data or encrypt it whilst keeping it in XML format? Because Flex states the data from the PHP file MUST be in XML format. Also, I need it to be esaily parsable as XML data.

How can I protect this data on route from PHP to Flex?
