It would be a bit overdone to accuse Apple of causing this by intent, but you may be helped by not using QuiRckTime on a Windows machine but revert to a good player like VLC, MPC or KM. The name QuiRckTime is well deserved with the gamma shifts and other problems it causes. Unless you are on a MAC it is better to avoid this player at all costs.

For Apple help... I am on Windows and do not use Quicktime, so have no idea where you go for Apple help
I need to get some Testing done on Win 8 and UI/Image changes soon. I will test this when I can and report back.
That would be great if I could get away from Quicktime, but unfortunately Quicktime is the industry standard. I produce stock videos and animations and the stock sites only accept quicktime format.
Maybe I'll wait until Oct 26th and buy the retail version of Windows 8 and then do a complete re-format, etc.
It's weird but it doesn't seem to matter if it's an H264, Photo JPEG, or Photo MPEG encoded Quicktime file.
Because Windows 8 is pre-release software it should not be assumed that third-party products are compatible with it.
Even after Win8 is officially released, there MAY be a delay before Quicktime is updated to fully support Win8
There is a reason "early adopters" are termed as being on the (B)leading edge!
And that especially applies to Win8. Very limited printer drivers available, Perfect Disk only came out with a Win8 update this week, Symantec Endpoint protection is still lacking, Asus utilities are not available, and the list goes on and on.
At least my Win8 Enterprise is activated and running, but it takes some time to get used to the 'Apps' interface (I heard 'Metro' is not done).
As far as I can tell, it will be wise to purchase the upgrade even if you don't install it right away. Apparently the price break is significant?
Since all the apps I use are running great on Win 7 I will be sticking with it until I have a darn good reason to switch
