I think you'll need to make a screen capture to show us what you're talking about. It's not clear to me.
You can use the camera icon at the top of the editing window to insert your screen capture in your reply.
That is exactly the problem. I was trying to insert a screen capture. I've done so numerous times, most recently a few days ago. Now I click the camera (insert image) and get the above mentioned black square.
Since I can't insert it here, I put it on Dropbox:
by the way, I just discovered that I get the same problem when I click Insert Link. The only difference is that in the top left corner of the black box it says "insert link"
P. S. I'm wondering if this is some sort of flag on just my account for posting too large an image or something similar. I haven't got any notices or warnings, and am not aware of violating any rules.

Have you tried clearing your browser cache and restarting the browser?
Thanks, Peter. That wasn't it, but it put me on the right track. I normally use Chrome as my browser. First I switched to Explorer. I didn't have the problem there.
Then I went back to Chrome, cleared cache and still had problem. Next I went back to Chrome tools to look at all settings more carefully. This time I noticed that zoom was set to 110%. As soon as I set it back to 100, problem went away. I frequently use Cntl + and - to zoom in on things, and didn't realize I hadn't got all the way back to 100. That setting is preserved across recycles of the browser.
