Limiting the File Size of an Image

    JTPickell

I see how to resize images by change the pixels or dimensions but is there a way to limit the file size?  For example, when submitting images for review some organizations set a limit on the size of the file, i.e, files may be now larger than 5MB.  Other than byt trial and error is there a way to set a file size limit?

      Thank you

Depends on the file format and what compression and optimization methods it uses. Generally JPEGs wil lbe most commonly used and a 5MB JPEG acan be whoppingly large, but its compression efficiency wil ldepend on the image content and chosen compression level a lot. Similarly, palette based formats like 8bit PNG wil lwork in some cases, but not all. per se there is no way to e.g. tell PS that you want to create a 5MB file. It's the otehr way around - you define the document size and the image saving/ export will create the file. anyway, In a time and day where people use Dropbox or otehr cloud-based services even from mobile devices all the time, file size limits on mail attachments or submission forms should be pretty much irrelevant.

If you choose "save as" jpeg you will be presented with a choice of quality.  Slide the slider and wait a second for the file size on the right to reflect what the size will be.

You might want to open the new smaller size image and make sure it still has enough size to look OK.  If too small a quality it will become pixelated.

In addition you can highlight images in Bridge, click on Tools/photoshop/imaage processor and then do a batch conversion.  It will not overwrite old images but put them in a seperate folder.

If you use "Save for Web" one of the options allows you to optimise for file size. You tell it that you want the file to be "x" size and it compresses accordingly. You don't have to guess. Once you have brought up the Save for Web option dialogue, the triangle in the upper right corner can be clicked on to reveal the Optimize to File Size option. This will bring up a second dialogue box where you plug the number in. The triangle is to the right of the Presets button. (And no, you cannot create an action that will allow you to have the same file size so you can batch through this route. I have asked all over the place and the answer has been a resounding no.)
