3. Re: Multiple Domain 404 and Folder Setup
Todd H&M Jun 13, 2013 2:46 PM (in response to Liam Dilley)I have a site that the owner uses to manage two completely different companies (different domain, different brand, etc.)
Is it possible to have 2 404 pages if they are in the same country?
They are in the US. Or, can I use the solution suggested and just pick a different country? Not sure what the country select is really doing?

Quick answer - Nope
Same for all system messages, shopping cart, payment form etc.

What is the full scope of picking a country do? Right know I could see how it might effect ecommerce sites because of currency. But for non-ecommerce sites does the 'county' designation do anything?
From chat I was just told:
"Country and the culture define the language for the site and time zone for the site."
"it also defines the currency and taxes etc."
Wondering if this is documented somewhere and I'm just missing it. Would love to the full definitive answer the clearly states topics like the 404 pages, etc.

Liam Dilley Jun 14, 2013 6:46 AM (in response to Todd H&M)System messages, Emails, Layouts and so on all have country versions. A country speaks another language so you will want to build a site in that language. Such changes allow you to do that.
But those features dont support two sites under the same domain. Its not really a good thing for many reasons from SEO, sitemap and more anyway. More hassle then its worth.

I'm suggesting two different domains entirely using the same BC admin account.
I can see how even then there might be SEO and other implications. Althought with Google Webmaster Tools, robots.txt and sitemap.xml it seems I could sort that out without much trouble.
My first choice is to keep different business on different BC admins for various reasons. But sometimes a business owner with multiple businesses (that have simple site functionality), only needs one platform.

Liam Dilley Jun 14, 2013 7:53 AM (in response to Todd H&M)You have to have a manual sitemap.xml and you can not use the BC one. It does not split sites, you will have one sitemap with all the pages.
You cant do much to sort it in webmaster tools (this is from experience)
You can do it, but you have to have generic system messages, where you can create custom landing pages on forms for example and you have to do things that dont give you the standard SEO boosts and you got to watch out for the negatives that can occur.
I think its more hassle then it benifits.
