How were these color toning effects achieved?

I've been experimenting in several programs (Lightroom, Photoshop) and playing with color balance and split toning but can't get these same vintage-ish color toned effects. Especially the toning and slightly opaque effect in the shadows.

It's probably done using blending modes. Many of those Instagram style looks are just blending modes where a duplicate of the source is tinted and then combined with the source using Multiply, Overlay or Linear Light modes. Add a few contrast adjustments and a photo filter and it's usually easy enough to replicate them. You're just gonna need more than a single instance/ layer.
