Does InDesign show missing fonts in the document?

InDesign doesn't download missing fonts, so I think you must be misnterpreting what has happened in the past. In General, if you see a missing fonts message during export and say OK rather than cancelling you will get a PDF, but any missing fonts will not be embedded. If the user has the required fonts when opeing the PDF, those will be used locally, or Reader will substitute an internal font with similar metrics for display. If this PDF is intended for a printer, however, it is imperative that you either find the missing fonts and install them or make sure that the printer has his own copies.
