I'm doing a major hardware upgrade and have a Mac Pro en route.
Right now the machine will have 2 drives in it:
1 - 512GB SSD SATA 6Gb/s
1 - 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s HDD
The SSD will be my main system drive.
Will the 1TB HDD be a good drive for disk caching? Or would I see a performance boost by adding an additional SSD just as a disk cache?
I guess I'm basically asking which is better as a disk cache: HDD or SSD?
I'd be using that drive as a disk cache for After Effects, Photoshop, Bridge, Cinema 4D and Final Cut.
Use your fastest drive with the fastest connection for your cache. That's your SSD.
So you're saying use the same SSD that the program is running on (ie. my system drive)? Or are you saying use an additional SSD?
If you can afford an additional SSD, great! But otherwise, the system disk SSD will be fine.
Andrew is correct.
