My new video camera saves video in m2ts (avchd) video format. Now, I would like to do some video editing and save the movies for playback on my computer and TV via a media player.
Thank you for any help.

It depends on the media player.
Are you talking about a computer-based Media Player, like Windows Media Player or iTunes -- or a DVR, BluRay and DVD player?
Most likely whatever media player you're using has the ideal specs for its video listed in its manual or online.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all best.
1 - Sharing for Computer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1058237
2 - You create a project based on your video... so power up your camera and check your settings in the camera's menu screen
3 - A menu works when creating a disc (DVD or BluRay) or (I think, I don't do this) when you create a Flash movie... which creates an entire directory structure of files to play from a computer or to upload to a web site... if all you want is a file to play... no menu
