Could the actual file you were working on have become corrupted? Try saving a test file from the Editor
File >> New >> Blank File
Choose a solid color for the background and use:
File >> Save As and choose jpeg.
Please try the same workflow once again just to be sure that this is happening for all files (hopefully not)..
In case yes, please try blank test file scenario as suggested above.
If not, try opening the corrupt file in say, IrfanView (freely downloadable) and save it once again. See if this makes it readable. Sometimes, the headers and jpeg markers become corrupt while saving. Doing so will recreate the headers.
The file gets saved in "my pictues" but it is a little square box in a larger rectangle. The box/file has a blue top and 6 colored dots in it. It is a folder icon
You were most recently asked to save a test jpg with just the background color. Is the “little square in larger rectangle…6 colored dots in it” describe the resulting test jpg that should only have the background color, or your original jpg that seems not to open in Elements?
In addition to saving a new file with just a background in it, what happens if you try to open the original jpg saved from PS back in PS, rather than Elements? Is the file corrupted in PS, too, or just Elements? In other words, you’re trying to determine if the issue is with the file, PS’s saving of it, or PSE’s opening of it.
Wow...this is really getting confusing to what should be a simple answer. The file is not corrupt. When I have edited it in photo shop, I save it as save as: example IMG_6542.JPG_edited. Then when I open my pictures, the edited piture is not there but an icon (either the Microsoft Picture Manager or the other icon that I explained earlier.) When I open the icon, the 6542 picture opens but it is not edited. It opens the original print, not the edited one.

Take care to keep the .jpg extension : an extension like .JPG_edited won't be recognized.
That is strange, I have used edited numerous times with no issues.
I did it... I figured out the problem. Incidentally, there must have been some formatting changes in photoshop that took place since I last used it with success.
The steps I now took. I opened up one of my JPEG picture files, opened up one of the pics with photoshop, edited it.
1. Clicked save as
2. The box came open as to where to save and I saved as JPG file plus I checked the "as a copy" box clicked OK/save
3. The next window that came up was the JPEG option box and I checked the "Preview box" and save
4. A window came up in photoshop asking if I wanted to save (the edits on the original) I clicked no because I wanted to keep the original as is.
5. I closed out of photoshop and there was my edited picture in "my pictures"
I am so glad that I got this all worked out. Thanks to all of you who tried to help me.
