    LR4: Publish Sort Order

    Little_Pale_Face Community Member

      Hi,

Can anyone let me into the secret of how to change the order of publishing images to the hard disk?

I have created a "Published Folder" and placed a few images in it. I can display the images in the various sort orders and can even move images around to make a custom sort order.

I have set up the Publish service to rename the images during publishing so hopefully they would reflect my sort order when viewed in filename order.

Whatever I do, it always seems to process from the newest to the oldest image and so become out of order - I select them all to be republished.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong.

I might just try using export rather than publish.

          Hi Brian,

First, let me explain the root of the problem:

When you first publish photos, they will be exported in order (e.g. custom sort order).

So, *if* you export all of them, and add a sequence number prefix, then they will be in order (i.e. alphabetic, on disk). - so far so good...

However, if you add a file or re-arrange them, then they may need to be exported again, completely from scratch (deleted first and removed from publishing...). Re-publishing may not suffice.

There is a solution in the form of an emerging plugin:

          Exporder

It renames published files to maintain user sort order. At the moment, it also mirrors master collection hierarchy (as exported folder tree) so if that's not acceptable - do tell.

            Hi Rob,

            Thanks for the update.

To be honest, I had forgotten I had asked the question (a sign of my age).

I shall have to think what I was trying to do at the time. I may have decided to live with it or something else changed my way of working.

            Thanks again

            Brian

Well, it's a very common desire to have a publish service which maintains sort order.

Web gallery plugins and other special purpose publishing plugins (like Flickr, SmugMug...) have some way of specifying order and so that becomes the "solution", for that consumption point anyway.

The problem often comes in if you want a copy of those photos you published to web replicated on your iPhone/iPad/Hard-Drive..., also in the correct order.

Put another way, the hard-drive publisher (and the ftp-publisher, and...) have no way of respecting user sort order, which can be a problem.

You can work-around by using export instead of publish, and re-exporting entire folders just to accomplish proper ordering, or just forget about it (do without your preferred order on some devices), etc. - dunno which route you took (?)

              Cheers,

              Rob

                Yes. Use TreeSync Publisher v6+.

If your viewing device supports use of file-creation date or capture-time for ordering, then published images can be in the same order as your photos in Lightroom:
