    gradient background

I can't seem to figure out a way to create a simple 2 color gradient for a background for a webpage in Fireworks cs3. I am completely new at this program and can find NO beginner tutorial or one single book. I am able to create a rectangle and use the property inspector to successfully fill it with the gradient I want. But then, of course, this shape is in a new layer. I try to flatten layers and do anything to turn this into something I can use, alas nothing works.
I know it is because I am using vector shapes, but to me this is completely unintuitive and I feel like a completely frustrated idiot. This has GOT to be a simple thing that people do all the time.

I have also tried just selecting the entire canvas and applying a gradient.

Please help as I am close to throwing my computer out the window.
