    Export from LR4 to CS5

    Heirloom Bob Community Member

When I export a photo from LR4 to CS5, I get wanrning that LR may require the PhotoShop Camera Raw Plug-in version 7.3. I see that the ACR 7.3 is out now yet when I click "Check for updates" in LR4 and "Updates" in Photoshop CS5, I am advised that all updates are in place, Can anyone shed any light on this situation?

CS5 can only use 6.x versions of ACR. If you are on ACR 6.7 then you are as up-to-date as you are ever going to be unless you upgrade Photoshop as a whole.

CS6 (the current version) would allow you to use the ACR 7.x versions, which are fully intercompatible with LR4 (the current version).

However, if you select the option "render in Lightroom" rather than "open anyway" when sending an image to Photoshop - note: this is not "exporting" - then LR will circumvent your non-compatible ACR version by carrying out the conversion itself. The result is a pre-saved bitmap file, accurately and correctly reflecting LR4's adjustments, which any version of PS can then read equally well. If you choose "open anyway" then ACR may or may not do an acceptable job of the conversion, but will have a go.

What you miss in this "render in LR" scenario, is the direct route whereby a not-yet-saved image is created by ACR directly into PS's memory. Various scripted options which normally rely on that route, therefore cannot happen - Edit in PS to "HDR", "Photomerge", "as Layers", "as Smart Object". Also you will then need to save your work from PS into precisely that already-established file - you cannot choose your own name and location - if you want it to be visible to LR.
