1. Re: Cp6 - Reusing advanced actions?
Lilybiri Dec 14, 2012 7:34 AM (in response to shawninvancouver)Shawn,
If you knew how many times I have been pleading, begging, to have a solution for this problem since advanced actions appeared in CP4.... But apparently it never made it on the priority list for the team. Other features were more important and nobody regrets that more than I do. Do not know if you once visited my blog... it is focusing for the most part on advanced actions.
With Captivate 6 one small thing has changed: you can save a file immediately as a template, and a template will have all the variables and advanced actions. Then you'll just have to clean it up. That is the way I'm reusing variables and advanced actions since they appeared. But in previous versions the save as a template were not available.
If not enough users ask for improvements about advanced actions, they'll never make it. I have introduced long lists with possible improvements, only the save as a template has made it up till now.

shawninvancouver Dec 14, 2012 7:51 AM (in response to Lilybiri)Lilybiri,
I always look forward to a response from you.... that is, except this time.
I really need to get your blog bookmarked as you have so many terrific thoughts.
So... actually, I will take back my first sentence because I believe you gave me an idea.
What if, I apply my universal theme to the test project (that has all my new advanced actions), once this dummy test project takes on my universal theme, I will then save it as a new template and... um... crap, this could be messy because I don't think I can merge advanced actions from one template to another.
I'll try and see what happens... but even if it does work, I think it will create quite a mess and require a substancial clean up.
Nevertheless, thank you yet again Lilybiri!

Lilybiri Dec 14, 2012 8:07 AM (in response to shawninvancouver)You did not tell what the differences are between the templates, but you can use the same dummy project to create several templates, not?
Every time I look forward to a new release, with the hope that we'll get improvements to advanced actions, but up till now have always been disappointed

4. Re: Cp6 - Reusing advanced actions?
shawninvancouver Dec 14, 2012 8:59 AM (in response to Lilybiri)I'll have to go back to your last question later.
But Captivate should allow for reusable objects (including advanced actions). We should have the ability to save them and simply load them up into any project.
Furthermore, the whole advanced action issue is made more difficult because there is no option to list out the steps and copy them to a text file. That way, making it easier to duplicate into another project. It seems ridiculous that whenever I need to document or duplicate a series of advanced actions, I must hand-copy them, step-by-step into a Word document.
How many others are suffering?

Lilybiri Dec 14, 2012 9:11 AM (in response to shawninvancouver)Yup, print possibility was one of my requests on the lists. And also being able to add comments.
Apparently not enough users are suffering or willing to enter requests.

SeatacDoug Dec 14, 2012 10:35 AM (in response to Lilybiri)Oh my gosh, consider me in on this one!
I am just getting back into Captivate again and I am running into all kinds of gotchas. I dislike advanced actions and avoid them when possible because you can't copy them, print them... or anything.
Also, I think there is a bug in Captivate 6 because using the USAGE option doesn't work. The window that opens is always blank, even where the advanced action is clearly in use.
Can someone please post the Adobe Captivate wish list (or whatever it is called) address and I will immediately send my request.
Glad to find three people who care about this.

BTW Usage button is working fine for me in the Advanced Actions dialog box, use it all the time. One other request I filed several times is to have a similar Usage button for the variables, so that it will be easier to delete variables that are no longer in use.

8. Re: Cp6 - Reusing advanced actions?
jwheatonumich Jan 30, 2013 2:15 PM (in response to Lilybiri)I would like to add my voice to the request for increased reusability in Captivate, particularly the re-use of Advanced Actions. I work at a large company with well over 50 designers. Once Captivate was our standard design tool. Today we use a much less powerful tool because that tool allows for complete reusability of any portion of the course (our current tool is DITA compliant).
I would love to see the Captivate team focus on reusability. Many large companies are moving towards reusable training content, and Captivate has fallen behind its competitors in this respect.

RodWard Jan 30, 2013 3:58 PM (in response to jwheatonumich)Posting something like this on the User Forum is not the best way to "add your voice". You should log a feature request using the form page that Adobe provides on their website. Those requests get tracked. User posts like this one don't.
