Editing DSLR footage with Premiere Elements 10

      Hi,

I am a complete beginner in the business of editing and if you read this message you hopefully will notice why. I am trying to edit DSLR footage (taken with Nikon D5100) with Adobe Premiere Elements 10, but the image of the footage is seriously slow and at times stops moving, while the audio does work, although with an annoying cracking sound to it.  The footage has been recorded with 1920x1080 25 fps, an option that Adobe has on the editing software.  I have also got the latest (32 bit) Quicktime installed, if it’s of any use...  I read somewhere that in order to edit DSLR footage, the H.264/MPEG-4 needs to be transcoded. I am not sure into what and how it’s done….any advice??? The footage that I have tried to edit with Adobe comes out in MOV files.

Also, I read that in some cases the computer just may be too slow. I had an idea that my PC laptop was suitable for editing, so I doubt this would be the case. It shows the footage perfectly on Windows Media Player anyway. The PC I’m using is:

      Asus Notebook U46E Series, Windows 7, 64-bit, Processor: Intel(R) Core ™ i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz, RAM: 8 GB

If you have any suggestions as to what the problem may be I would greatly appreciate your advice!!!!
