Are you on a Mac, or a PC?
What did you choose for the Project Preset, at New Project?
As far as I know, a Mac will not capture from tape as AVI, only as Mov
The internals of the file SHOULD be the same... but I don't use Mac so I am not 100% sure
Yes, It is a mac. That explains the.mov file. My bad, I should have known that. Only reason for trying AVI, is that my DVD burns are very bad, and someone thought I should try capturing as AVI. Guess I'll have to keep looking for a reason.
The MOV Capture, on a Mac, should be just as good an option.
Are you having quality issues with your MOV Captures?
When you a capture video from a miniDV over a FireWire connection, it doesn't matter whether the captured file says .mov or .avi at the end. It's a DV file. The files are virtually identical. They contain the identical video data at at the identical quality level. So there's no advantage to capturing your files as AVIs.

Sticking with one discussion for a continuation of the same question is actually better, so you don't miss an answer
So... please pick one of the two discussions and continue with discussing your "poor" quality DVD
I am going to answer in your other message, and ignore this one since I will consider the question as being answered
